Does Travel Contribute to Good Health?

7 Takeaways from the Global Coalition on Aging's Latest Report: The Physical, Psychological and Social Benefits of Travel

At the start of the new year, we are busy making resolutions for better health and to establish a more active lifestyle.  During the cold winter months, we resolve to stay on our diet and to exercise more.  Many of us walk laps around indoor malls or at the gym.  Good; but maybe there’s a better, more pleasurable way to promote good health – group tours!

A research paper by The Global Coalition on Aging titled, Destination Healthy Aging: The Physical, cognitive, and social Benefits of Travel equivocally states what we have known all along.  Travel is good for the body and the soul.  It concludes that travel provides a path to healthy aging.  “In fact, those who engage in more leisure activities such as travel are generally healthier and report greater satisfaction in their lives than those who do not.” (The Global Coalition on Aging, 2013)

The motivation of the Coalition’s research is to promote healthy aging in order to sustain active lifestyles into older adulthood.  This is beneficial to us individually as well as to society as a whole.

This research sites many studies that have found that travel, particularly group travel, promotes healthy aging.  Travel improves physical and mental health and helps to combat depression, heart disease, dementia, and Alzheimer’s Disease.  The longitudinal Framingham Heart Study, sited in the research paper, found a positive relationship between travel and heart health.  The researchers concluded,” that vacationing is a restorative behavior with an independent positive effect on health” as contrasted to the health of those who don’t regularly travel.

“Travel provided the opportunity to alleviate stress, by offering a break from work or from other stressful and repetitive daily routines.”  We are now aware that stress can play a role in many disease processes.  “Data from the Mayo Clinic explains that not taking a break from everyday stressors can elevate the amount of stress hormone cortisol in the body, which actually speeds up the aging process.” (Mayo Foundation for Medical Education and Research, Healthy Aging, 2011) Travel provides a breather from our day to day obligations and an opportunity to rest, relax, and rejuvenate.

But perhaps the most striking finding is that travel presents us with novel cognitive stimulation which works to improve brain health.  Activities associated with travel, like reading a map, visiting a museum, taking in new sites, and meeting new people build brain resilience.   “Who would have thought that we could get such positive and lasting results from something so enjoyable as a trip exploring America’s natural attractions, a river cruise or a vacation taking in the lights of the big city?” (Global Coalition on Aging)

To protect your valuable electronics (everything from cell phones to cameras to laptops) make sure you have name, address, phone on the gadget itself, not just on the carry case.
