Explore the rich history and culture of the fascinating city of Puerto Plata. Journey across the city center to discover colorful Victorian-style architecture. Visit one of the Caribbean’s most popular rum distilleries. Next, travel across the malecón (waterfront) to see the San Felipe Fortress. Built in 1564, the fort was intended to protect the city from pirate activity. Visit Independence Square to see the San Felipe Cathedral and the Dominican Republic’s finest art galleries.

At the King’s Warehouse and Cultural Park, a local guied will lead you through authentic replicas of the stick, stone and wooden houses built by Bonaire’s early inhabitants. From Seru Largo, you’ll take in a spectacular panoramic view of the island. Continue south to the salt ponds, which are now also a flamingo sanctuary. Learn how salt is produced today and how it was mined back in the 19th century. You will experience a slice of history at the former slave huts -- these are the original huts used to shelter the slaves working the salt pans.

On your guided tour, see two of the Caribbean’s iconic bridges: the Queen Emma Bridge, a floating bridge which connects both sides of Willemstad, and the Queen Juliana Bridge, the tallest bridge (185 ft.) in the Caribbean providing picturesque views of the ocean. Visit Chobolobo -- the Dutch colonial country estate where the famous Curaçao liqueur has been distilled since 1946. Other highlights include: a visit to the Aloe Vera Farm; a tour of Chichi’s Workshop, a center for local arts and craftsmanship; and, a journey through Punda, Willemstad’s oldest nieghborhood.
